Bounty Killer
Reggae artist Bounty Killer has broken his silence amidst growing calls for him to receive the Order of Distinction (OD), Jamaica’s sixth-highest honor, for his significant contribution to the development of Dancehall music. The debate over the honor erupted after his protégé Wayne Marshall received the OD on National Heroes Day, October 16, prompting some to argue that Dancehall veterans like Bounty Killer and Beenie Man should have been recognized first.
In response to the ongoing discussion, Bounty Killer took to social media on Friday to share his thoughts. He posted a video clip of himself and fellow artist Shaggy on stage, where he confidently declared, "Let me tell unu. They can’t give me no OD. I am a OG." In the caption, he further emphasized his point, stating, "What’s a OD to a OG/One General that’s me." The acronym "OG" stands for "Original Gangster" and is often used to describe someone who is highly respected and regarded as an originator or pioneer in their field.
The Order of Distinction is typically awarded to Jamaican citizens who have rendered outstanding and important services to the country, as well as to distinguished individuals from other countries as honorary members. In February of this year,
Bounty Killer's influence on the global recognition of dancehall and reggae music is undeniable. His hit songs like "Look," "Living Dangerously," and "Benz and Bimma" continue to resonate with fans worldwide, contributing to the genre's enduring popularity.
His impact extends beyond his own music. Bounty Killer has played a pivotal role in nurturing the careers of other prominent artists, such as Vybz Kartel and Mavado, who have become influential figures in their own right, thanks to his mentorship and guidance.
Not only a musical force, Bounty Killer has actively engaged in social and community initiatives in Jamaica, particularly those focused on addressing crime and violence. His advocacy for change and his support for peace and unity within the dancehall community underscore his commitment to improving society.
